Duncan Watts takes lead in Summer Series

After the OK Open the previous day there was a smaller than usual turnout for the start of the Summer Series. Five Lightning 368 sailors started the series in light winds from the north-east with shifts both to north and to east. Race officers Clive Church and Tricia Evison set a course downstream of the club jetty with two buoys separated by about 100m with the bottom buoy rounded to starboard and the top buoy rounded to port.

Mary Webb (LN 178) won the first race ahead of Andrew Yuille (LN 446), Duncan Watts (LN 431), Nigel Webb (LN 372) and Peter Withrington (LN 442). Nigel decided to sit out the rest of the day after the first race. In the second race, Mary Webb and Andrew Yuille battled for the lead during much of the race before Andrew pulled out a small lead and took the win. Peter and Duncan were also closely matched throughout and raced to the line with Peter third and Duncan fourth. Andrew Yuille packed up during the lunch hour leaving Peter, Mary and Duncan to race in the afternoon.

After lunch, the wind was a little stronger and Duncan won the third race with Peter second and Mary third. Mary decided to stop after the third race, leaving Peter and Duncan to battle it out in the final race. They were closely matched throughout and Duncan finished first.
