Youth Sailing

Our club is a family friendly environment and our young sailors are often out on the water. Coaching takes place through the year led by our experienced club members and our young members can sail in a variety of dinghies, with the Optimist class for younger sailors. Many families own an Optimist dinghy and this is backed up by a large fleet of club boats. Once our young sailors have outgrown the Optimist, young sailors can move on to other classes of boats, either by purchasing their own boat or using one of the club boats. Older children can use the club’s Topper and Lightning dinghies which are available to sail and race in.

The club holds a series of coaching events through the year where inexperienced sailors can learn sailing and racing skills, techniques and rules. Young sailors can join our friendly racing on Sundays and are assisted by the experienced sailors to learn how to race and the rules associated with racing.

Our annual Under-21 Trophy is held in Summer and is an opportunity for all our young sailors to compete for a trophy specifically for them. The race is open to all club members under 21 on the day of the race with an additional prize for the highest place sailor under the age of 16. An annual award called the Gordon Daniel Trophy is given to the cadet club member who has, in the opinion of the Sailing Committee, contributed the most to the success of the club racing during the year.
