The second day of racing in the Winter Series saw light south-easterly winds which increased slightly once racing started. Race officers, Dave Phillips and Ash Stevens set a course with the startline downstream to a C buoy set about one hundred and fifty metres downstream of the jetty and taken to port. The sailors then returned downwind past the club to an A buoy set out from the Bucks bank on the bend and taken to starboard. Winds varied through the morning with the A buoy being tricky in the first race but the wind direction changing during the second race and making the bottom of the course more inconsistent.
Nine boats took the start, James Dyas (OK 212 aka OK 2203), Andrew Boxer (OK 64 aka OK 2196), Jerome Dreux (OK 2007), Gary Adshead in the club OK with his own sail (OK 1695) and James Long (OK 1990) sailing OKs, Nick Reuter in L 125425 and Clive Evison in P 1355. In Lightning 368s were Martin Evans (LN 150) and Nigel Webb (LN 372).
The boats jostled for starting position on the line with the best wind midstream. James Dyas took an early lead heading round the C buoy with Andrew and Gary close behind. By the end of the lap, James had opened up a lead over 45 seconds. Behind, Andrew crossed the line at the end of the first lap just ahead of Gary with James Long not far behind in fourth and Jerome and Clive following on his stern. A gap had opened to the rest with Martin leading Nick and Nigel. James Dyas maintained his gap in the lead on the second lap to Andrew who had pulled away from Gary. Martin caught up with the larger pack and passed Jerome and James whilst Clive moved into fourth, Jerome then passed James at the buoy and moved into sixth. James extended his lead on the final lap to win the race convincingly. Behind there were further changes as the wind dropped considerably on the lower part of the course, Andrew sailed the downwind leg on the Bucks bank and found there was no wind. He was passed by Gary and Clive who chose the other side of the river and Clive passed Gary for second place as they rounded the A buoy. Andrew rounded the A buoy in fourth with Martin just behind and they battled back to the finish line with Andrew holding on for fourth place just ahead of Martin in fifth. Nick had found a good line rounding the C buoy and caught up with James and Jerome on the downwind leg and they raced side by side all the way to the A buoy. Jerome rounded the buoy ahead of James and Nick and they tacked back up the course to the finish line on different lines with James finding the best route with a tack straight to the finish line to take sixth ahead of Nick seventh and Jerome eighth and Nigel ninth. After handicap adjustment, James Dyas was first, Martin second, Nigel third, Gary fourth.
The wind had increased for the second race and Gary made the best start from the line rounding the C buoy with a good lead over the others. It was close battle for second place and the rest of the pack rounded the buoy together to sail the downwind leg. Clive moved into second place and then passed Gary for the lead after the A buoy. Gary crossed the line at the end of the first lap in second, James Dyas third, Jerome fourth, James Long fifth, Martin sixth, Nick seventh, Andrew eighth and Nigel ninth. Clive extended his lead on the second lap. Behind, the gaps remained fairly static with Gary about thirty seconds ahead of James Dyas, James Long fifteen second behind in fourth with Jerome and Martin just behind. Andrew passed Nick for seventh. On the third lap, Martin passed Jerome for fifth. On the fourth lap, James Dyas found some good wind on the Bucks bank and caught up with Gary and they crossed the line at the end of the lap together. James Long also found the same route and extended his gap to Martin and Jerome, but on the fifth lap, Martin found an amazing gust and caught and passed James on the downwind leg whilst James Dyas moved into second place. Clive finished the sixth lap to take a lonely win ahead of James Dyas second, Gary third, Martin fourth, James Long fifth, Jerome sixth, Andrew seventh, Nick eighth and Nigel ninth. After Handicap adjustment, Martin was first, James Dyas second, Gary third, James Long fourth and Clive fifth.
Martin leads the Winter Series ahead of Jerome second and James Long third. Duncan leads the Personal Handicap ahead of Jerome and James Long.
