Light winds challenge sailors at the end of the Winter Series

The last day of racing in 2021 at Cookham Reach Sailing Club saw light south-westerlies tax the sailors as they edged their way around the course against strong currents after heavy rains earlier in the week.

The race officer, Clive Evison assisted by Christine Roy, James Long and Clive Church set a course starting from the clubhouse with a downwind leg all the way to the A buoy which was set midstream near to the fallen willow tree and taken to starboard. The sailors then tacked back down the river to a B set upstream of the bend and taken to port, then back across to the middle of the river downstream just above the bend where they negotiated the D buoy taken to starboard and down to the C buoy taken to starboard which was positioned just above the finish line at the AOD box.

Four sailors took the start with very light winds hindering the sailors from the outset and going was very slow downwind from the start line to the bend. The two Lightning sailors, Martin Evans (LN 150) and Duncan Watts (LN 431) jumped into the lead and opened a small gap from Jerome Dreux (OK 2007) and Gary Adshead (OK 1998). By the bend, Martin lead Duncan with Jerome third and Gary fourth. The light winds and strong river current meant some tactical sailing trying to figure out whether avoiding the current by hugging the bank or sailing to find the pockets of wind or gust would be the most fruitful. It appeared that the light weight of the two Lightning 368s suited the conditions best and they opened up a healthy lead over the two OKs. The sailors struggled on the C buoy with various lines taken in and out of the mark and several times boats stalled in the light wind and strong current as they rounded the mark before a small gust managed to start the boat moving again. As the boats started the final lap, Duncan closed in on Martin as they sailed up to the bend and they sailed side by side downwind to the A buoy. Duncan took a different line and took the lead which he held to the finish. The two OKs were closely matched for most of the race, with Jerome holding third all the way to the flag. On Handicap, Duncan won with a ten second lead over Martin, Jerome third and Gary fourth.

The two Lightning 368s lead Jerome (OK 2007) who has just tacked around the C buoy with Gary following.

The race officer started the countdown for the second race almost as soon as the first race finished and with slightly lighter winds at the bottom of the course the race commenced. The two Lightnings again took the lead, but this time the OKs were able to stay in close attendance. Martin again took an early lead with Duncan second, Gary third and Jerome in fourth. It was very slow going down to the bend with the four sailors taking about five minutes to make the short distance to the bend. The winds were slightly stronger at the bend and on the upper part of the course, Martin pulled out a gap on the rest of the fleet with Gary battling with Duncan for second. With the lighter winds, the sailors found it harder going around the course, particularly at the C buoy with some struggling to push forward having rounded the buoy. Duncan maintained a small gap and edged it out slightly during the second lap with Jerome falling back behind Gary in fourth. As they started the final lap, Martin led by xx seconds with Duncan second, Gary third and Jerome fourth. These positions held to the flag and Martin won by a minute and 41 seconds from Duncan with Gary pulling back some of the gap to cross the line thirteen seconds behind and Jerome in fourth. On Handicap, Martin won, Duncan second, Gary third and Jerome fourth.

The Winter Series has been won by Gary Adshead with Clive Evison (LN 412) second and Martin Evans third. In the Personal Handicap, Jerome Dreux won, James Long (OK 1990) second and Duncan Watts (LN 431) third.
