Christine Roy (LN 403) won the Harbour Cup, held for sailors who have not won a Series at any club, after taking two wins in the afternoon’s racing.
The race took place in decreasing north-easterly winds which challenged all the sailors, particularly in the lower part of the course. The race course consisted of a dog-leg with a B buoy on the Berkshire bank taken the startboard and a D buoy in the middle of the river taken to port. The A buoy at the top of the course was positioned 100m above the dog leg and taken to starboard. The sailors then sailed downwind to the C buoy positioned just below the start line and on the Berkshire bank and taken to starboard.
For the first race, Christine took an early lead ahead of Warren de Reuck in his Graduate. The dog leg between B and D caused problems for the sailors due to the wind direction and lack of wind just below the D buoy. Christine slowly extended her lead over the three laps and took the win.
In the second race, Warren made an excellent start and led up to the B buoy, as the sailors crossed the river to the D buoy it again caused issues and Warren sailed into the wind shadow below the buoy and could not get round. Christine sneaked up the inside and rounded the buoy. Christine pulled a good lead up to the A buoy which she held down to the C buoy. As she rounded the C buoy, Nick Reuter started the race after being late onto the water and having difficulties sailing up to the course due to the non-existent wind between the clubhouse and the bend. Nick raced Christine up the course and unlapped himself at the end of the lap. Christine held her considerable lead to the flag.
