The sailors encountered a day of light winds on Sunday 2nd May with Martin Evans and Andrew Boxer dominating the day’s sailing in the Lightning and Handicap classes. OD Peter Austen assisted by Merelene Davis and Gary Adshead set two courses during the day, the first day’s race was set with the classic Cookham course of middle B buoy positioned on the bend taken to starboard, top A buoy taken to starboard and bottom C buoy also taken to starboard and then a D buoy was added to the race course to be taken to port on the return leg. The race day started with very light winds, particularly at the bottom of the course varying from west to north-west and occasionally shifting round to the south.
The Lightnings made the best start in the first race, with a close battle between Mary Webb (LN 178), Clive Evison (LN 304), Martin Evans (LN 150), Tricia Evison (LN 412) and Duncan Watts (LN 431), Jerome Dreux (LN 155) and Nigel Webb (LN 372) up to the first buoy. However, by the bend Martin Evans had taken the lead and pulled a gap ahead Clive Evison and Mary Webb. In the Handicap class, Andrew Boxer (OK 2196) initially got the jump on the only other sailor in the class, James Long (OK 1990) but James then took the lead going up to the bend by tacking across into the middle of the river where he found more wind. However, as all the sailors neared the bend the wind dropped in the middle of the river and Andrew took back the lead by sailing across to the Berkshire bank and rounded the B buoy ahead of James and would lead the rest of the race easing out a considerable lead by the end. In the Lightning class, the race ended with Martin first, Mary second, Tricia third and Nigel fourth. All the sailors had to contend with very light wind throughout the race, particularly near the bottom buoy and on the stretch up to the bend.
In the second race, James made a terrible start and trailed Andrew and the Lightning fleet. He never got close to Andrew who won the race easily. Racing was close between Mary, Clive and Martin in the Lightnings and Clive took the win ahead of Martin with Mary third and Duncan fourth. The race was shortened to only one lap by race end due to the light winds.
The wind picked up during the lunch break with dark clouds appearing and wind conditions looked more promising before the race start at around 10-15mph prior to the start, however as the race start neared they dropped again and the sailors had another race of light winds, at their strongest just after the bend. In the Handicap class, Andrew again made a good start and had a considerable gap ahead of James for most of the race and took a third win of the day. In the Lightnings, Duncan got a fantastic start and had a good lead by the end of the first lap with Martin Evans third and Clive Evison fourth. Behind them, Mary and Tricia battled for fourth with Jerome just behind. During the race, Martin slowly closed the gap to Duncan and Tricia managed to pass Clive with Mary fifth. On the final lap, Martin and Duncan battled for the race lead, with Martin edging it by the finish and Duncan a close second. Tricia had pulled a gap on Clive and took third with Clive fourth and Jerome came home in fifth.
There was good consistent wind for the start of the final race of the day and James made an excellent start on a port tack sailing up the river and over to the Buckinghamshire bank and he opened a good gap on Andrew by the bend. Andrew chased after and both OKs led the Lightning fleet who were evenly matched at the start. On his tack back across to the B buoy, James lost the lead to Andrew who got a good gust as he sailed up to the B buoy on the starboard tack. They both rounded the B buoy with the Lightnings following some way behind and both sailors extended their lead on the Lightning fleet during the first lap. On the sail between the B and A buoys of the penultimate lap, James got in a wind pocket and two of the Lightning sailors, Martin and Mary passed him, they were in a close battle with a slight gap over Clive and Duncan who were battling for third in class. On the final lap, Clive and Duncan also passed James who was now a considerable distance behind Andrew who crossed the finish line first. Martin won the Lightning class with a small lead over Mary, then a gap to Clive with Duncan just behind. Tricia finished fifth and Keira Swinney (LN 114) came home sixth.
