A total of eight sailors took part in the Summer Frolic in more light wind conditions on Sunday 6th September and there was another day of competitive close sailing.
Seven sailors took the start of the first race with a light wind next to the club jetty meaning a slow start to the race. Andrew Boxer (OK 2196) and Gary Adshead (OK 1998) fought a close battle in the early stages of the race with James Long trailing (OK 1990). The wind picked up at several points during the race, but there issues for many competitors with pockets of no wind around the course and particular problems on the middle upstream buoy. Andrew eventually opened up a good lead and won the race with James taking Gary and closing on Andrew on the last lap of the race but still finishing 49 seconds behind. Gary finished third with Christine Roy (LN 403) having an excellent race and beating the rest of the competitors.
After lunch the winds were similar to the morning race and Gary made an excellent start and quickly opened up a sizeable gap on the rest of the fleet. Martin Evans (LN 150) had joined the competitors for the afternoon and fought out second with Mary Webb (LN 178), Andrew Boxer, Nick Reuter (L 85428), James Long and Jerome Dreux (OK 2007) in the early part of the race. In this race, the top buoy and downstream middle buoy were causing issues for many sailors due to the lack of wind and James Long managed to come from behind to move into third by sailing directly across from the top buoy and sail down the Berkshire bank to the middle buoy. Gary took the win in the second race by over three minutes with James finishing second on the water and Martin a close third, Martin therefore taking second on handicap.
The final race of the day was sailed in very light winds which proved difficult for all competitors. Gary again made the best start and took a good early lead with Martin chasing and the rest of the fleet following behind. James took a penalty at the end of the first lap after hitting the bottom buoy and dropped from second to last. Gary and Martin opened a sizeable gap on the rest of the fleet and finished with Martin six seconds behind at the flag and took the win on handicap. Andrew finished third on the water ahead of Mary Webb with Mary finished ahead on handicap. There was a close battle for fifth between as Nick Reuter and James Long caught Jerome Dreux on the final lap and they fought it out on the final downwind leg to the line, Jerome crossing the line five seconds ahead of James with Nick three seconds behind.
Clive Evison still leads the series on 139 points, but with a reduced lead of five points over Andrew Boxer (134pts) with Mary Webb third on 127 points. The series continues on Sunday 13th September.
