After a trial race the previous weekend, racing returned to Cookham Reach Sailing Club with round one of the Summer Frolic Series on Sunday 9th August.
In very light winds mostly from the East, eight sailors took to the water after a briefing on Covid-safe racing for the first race. The first race was won by Andrew Boxer (OK 2196) after battling with Jerome Dreux (OK 2007) with Mary Webb (LN 178) third ahead of Clive Evison (P 1355) who crossed the line first, but finished fourth on handicap adjusted time. Most sailors reported very variable wind conditions throughout the course with a few incidents at buoys caused by wind drops or direction changes.
After the lunch break, two of our new members, Daniel Hanrahan (LN 281) and James Hanrahan (LN 304) joined the racers for the second race for their first competitive race. The early part of the race saw some very close racing with Clive Evison stretching out a good lead on the pack, after rounding the top mark the pack separated out and Andrew and Jerome continued their battling from the first race with Mary following closely. The winds were lighter still during this race and the sailors only managed three laps over the forty minute race. Clive crossed the finish line with a healthy lead and won the race with Mary second and Andrew third ahead of Jerome.
Most of the sailors decided to sit out the final race of the day due to the light winds and hot sun, so Andrew, Jerome and Nick Reuter (L 85428) were the only starters. Andrew won the final race of the day comfortably after some close racing throughout the first lap with Jerome and Nick, but then Andrew managed to pull away during the last lap. Jerome crossed the line second and Nick finished third.
Andrew leads the series ahead of Jerome with Clive and Mary tied in third.
