Preparing your dinghy for Winter

Look out! look out !
Jack frost is about
He’s under our covers and bows;
And all through the night,
The gay little sprite
Is working where nobody knows

He’ll climb each mast,
So nimble and fast,
His silvery powder he’ll shake;
To the portals he’ll creep,
And while we’re asleep,
Such wonderful pictures he’ll make.

Then across the grass
He’ll merrily pass,
And change all its greenness to white;
Then home he will go,
And laugh, Ho!Ho! Ho!
What fun he’s had in the night!!!

CRSC masts on a Winters evening

Keep the frost out and prepare for Winter – Suggestions

  • Check your boat over for required repairs and parts that need replacing and carry out these jobs during the Winter and early Spring
  • Remove the mast, label clearly and store under the Clubhouse (Lightnings, in particular can suffer from mast foot damage if the mast is left in, due to water freezing at the base of the mast, expanding and cracking the housing)
  • Invert the boat if possible, keeping bow, stern, rudder and sheets off the ground
  • Keep the cover taught and ensure water does not puddle
  • Tie down securely, use tie-downs in the ground either side of your berth and do not link to your neighbours ties
  • Remove hatches and bungs
  • Pump up tyres
  • Take your sails home, check for any required repairs, clean them and store them flat and somewhere dry
The club boats are stored inverted for the Winter, with sheets secured inside the boat and are secured using the tie-downs.
