Exception to these duties are the first Saturdays in May to September.
- Prior to your duty day, the first named officer should contact the other(s) named to confirm availability.
- Arrive at the Club by 13.00 hours.
- If you are able, please bring 1 litre of milk and leave in the kitchen for general use. There is an “honesty box” to cover tea, coffee and squash consumed.
- Keep boats off the water until the Safety Boat(s) are launched and ready.
- Instruct novices to keep within sight of the OD Box and upstream of the launch ramp.
- Launch the Safety Boat(s) (see Officer of the Day Duties – Para 7). The number of safety boats will be determined by the weather and wind strength, the number of officers on duty, the number of sailors and the level of activity on the river generally.
- Set a simple course to allow helms to practice particularly mark surrounding and liaise with the sailors for starting races as required.
- On land check that all those sailing have rigged their boats correctly, particularly club boats. All crews should be wearing buoyancy aids before going on the water. Help to launch boats if required.
- On the river your prime duty is safety and protection of novices from other river traffic. However, do offer sailing advice and encouragement as required. Keep a look out.
- Ensure the use of the club boats is rotated amongst those wishing to use them and keep those waiting informed.
- Towards the end of the session you might arrange a short fun race. Probably no need for flags, keep it simple and informal.
- Please ask those who use a club boat to record their usage in the Boat Logbook, located in or on foyer chest of drawers. Help to retrieve and berth boats by 17.00 hrs ensuring all club boats are fully packed away.
- Retrieve the safety boat(s) and stow the gear.
- If there are no members wishing to sail by 15.00 hrs, the officers may cancel sailing for the day.
