Scoring Systems

Either a Low Point System or a High Point System is used, as specified in the event instructions.

  1. Low Point System (see RRS 90.3, A2, A4)
    1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points, Nth place = N points.
DNC (Did Not Compete) = Event Entries + 1
DNS (Did Not Start) = Race Starters + 1
OCS (On Course Side) = Race Starters + 1
DNF (Did Not Finish) or RAF (Retired After Finishing) = Race Starters + 1
    DSQ (Disqualified) = Race Starters + 3

  2. High Point System (see RRS 90.3, A2).
    1st place = 20 points, 2nd place = 19 points, Nth place = 21-N points.
DNC (Did Not Compete) = 0
DNS (Did Not Start) = 0
OCS (On Course Side) = 20 – Race Starters
DNF (Did Not Finish) or RAF (Retired After Finishing) = 20 – Race Starters
    DSQ (Disqualified) = 18 – Race Starters
No boat finishing shall score less than 1 point. No boat shall score less than 0 points.

  3. High Point System – Winter (see RRS 90.3, A2).
For Winter racing points are awarded depending on the number of race starters as follows:

    Race Starters1st Place2nd Place3rd PlaceFourth Place
    2-530.1292831-N
    6-1030.229.12831-N
    11+30.329.228.131-N

DNC (Did Not Compete) = 0
DNS (Did Not Start) = 0
OCS (On Course Side) = 30 – Race Starters
DNF (Did Not Finish) or RAF (Retired After Finishing) = 30 – Race Starters
    DSQ (Disqualified) = 28 – Race Starters
No boat finishing shall score less than 1 point. No boat shall score less than 0 points.

  4. Ties
    Race Ties (RRS A7):
If boats in a race are tied on finishing (Club Classes) or on corrected times (Handicap), the points for the tied places are divided equally.

    Series Ties (RRS A8.1):
If boats in a series are tied, each boat’s scores (not positions) are listed in order from best to worst (excluding discards) and compared.  The tie is broken at the first point where the scores differ in favour of the better result.

    Series Ties (RRS A8.2):
If, after RRS A8.1, boats in a series are still tied, the boats are ranked in order of their scores in the last race (including discards).  Any remaining ties are broken using scores in the next-to-last race, and so on.
