With yellow boards and limp flags, the prospects were not good for racing and only two sailors turned out for the first round of the Winter Series. But Nick Reuter, the OD, hung in there as the wind picked up a little and Andrew Boxer (OK 2196) and Kevin Singleton (Lightning 124) put to the water.
Andrew struggled to the start against the current as Kevin drifted back on to the line and a tense tacking battle took place up the Berkshire bank. Both sailors then found a breeze on the Buckinghamshire bank where Andrew got stuck and Kevin managed to make it back to the Berkshire bank and eventually made it around the top buoy.
Due to the light winds, the race was curtailed at a single lap and Kevin took a well-deserved victory as the wind dropped completely. Andrew had to retire after a futile attempt to round the buoy in ever more fickle light breezes.
Kevin, therefore, takes the lead in the Winter Series with 30.1 points ahead of Andrew on 28.0. In the Personal Handicap Kevin leads on 100 points and is the only scorer.
