Continuing the recent blustery conditions, the Nat Phillips Trophy was held in windy conditions with a south to south-westerly wind throughout the day. The trophy was decided by the two afternoon races after an issue with the race rules in the morning.
The first race was held in slightly lighter winds and Dave Phillips / Martin Church (Enterprise 21099) and Gary Adshead (Solo 5106) closely fought the lead on the first lap. Richard Cartwright / Ray Swinney (Enterprise 22174) and James Long (OK 2094) both started late with E 22174 stuck in a wind pocket below the start and OK 2094 being late onto the water. Clive Evison (Phantom 1355) started almost 3/4 of a lap after the rest of the fleet and set off in pursuit. Clive overtook James and Richard / Ray and then set about catching up to Gary but could not catch up before the race finished. The race finished with Dave and Martin ahead of Gary, with Clive third, Richard and Ray fourth with James fifth.
Winds in the second race were gustier and caught out most of the sailors at some point during the race. The first lap was closely fought between the Enterprise, Solo and OK with Dave / Martin eventually pulling away. Gary and Richard / Ray fought closely for most of the race until late in the race a strong gust caught out Gary who dry capsized and spent the last half a lap bailing out with James quickly catching him but not managing a pass before the race finish. Clive meanwhile, had caught and passed James, Richard / Ray and Gary during the race and finished second.
Overall, the Nat Phillips Trohy was won by Dave Phillips and Martin Bishop ahead of Clive Evison and Gary Adshead third.
